Letter of the Day: Third world country

Third world country

EDITOR: If you look at third world countries, you’ll find that typically they have these common characteristics:

• Concentration of wealth in a few hands.

• An inordinate amount of their national budget spent on the military.

• Few if any entitlements for the average citizen.

• Limited education for most of the population.

• Few or no regulations on businesses and industries.

• A tax system strongly favoring the wealthy and powerful.

• Few if any environmental controls.

• Few if any protections for employee unions.

There are those in the United States who believe that a system with the above characteristics would be good for our country but never consider that these same characteristics, if implemented, could turn the U.S. into a third world country.

Of course, there are those who think that the U.S. will always be the richest, most powerful nation on Earth. I’m sure the citizens of Greece, Rome and Great Britain believed that pipe dream before their empires disintegrated.
