Learn how to trim your rose bushes like a pro during a free pruning demonstration Saturday, Jan. 18, at Healdsburg Nursery.

The hour-long demonstration, starting at 10 a.m., will conclude with time for questions and answers. Refreshments will be served. The nursery is at 12950 Old Redwood Hwy., Healdsburg. For information, call 433-8904 or visit healdsburg-nursery.com.

PETALUMA: Order your roses in time for bloom

Thinking about starting a rose garden of your own, or planting some additional roses in your garden? If so, now is the time to order your bare-root roses in time for the May bloom.

But for those who already have bushes in the ground, Garden Valley Ranch in Petaluma is holding its annual rose pruning class at 11 a.m. Jan. 25, led by expert Fallon Anderson.

HEALDSBURG: Demonstrations on pruning roses

The Russian River Rose Company is also holding two rose pruning demonstrations Jan. 25 and Feb. 1., ending with hour-long demonstrations on how to propagate.

The intensive course runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., starting indoors with a demonstration of pruning techniques and how to sharpen your shears. There will also be time to practice your cuts in the garden. “Rosey Jan” Tolmasoff, who created the picturesque nursery with its extensive display gardens, also will provide a continuous supply of warm beverages and muffins.

Cost for the rose pruning class and propagation demonstration is $30, or $10 for the propagation demonstration only from 3 to 4 p.m.
