Off-duty San Francisco officer shoots driver after crash

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco police say an off-duty officer shot a motorist in the leg after the two got into a fight over a minor car collision.

Officer Albie Esparza says the fender bender occurred shortly after midnight Sunday when the two got off Interstate 280 in the city's Bayview neighborhood.

Esparza says the dispute escalated into a physical altercation, leading the female officer to fire her gun. The bullet hit the other person's leg and did not cause life-threatening injuries.

Police say the officer has been placed on administrative leave while the department investigates the incident.

The names of the officer and the person shot have not been released.
