EUREKA — The 44-year-old Humboldt County man charged with murdering the pastor of a Roman Catholic church has been ordered held without bail.

Gary Lee Bullock is charged with murder, with a special allegation of torture, in the New Year's Day beating death of the Rev. Eric Freed in the rectory of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Eureka.

Bullock had been held in the Humboldt County jail on $1.2 million bail since his arrest last week, but on Friday a judge granted a prosecution motion to rescind it.

Humboldt County Superior Court Judge Dale Reinholtsen also imposed a gag order in the case.

A police affidavit says Bullock tried to blow up the rectory and set fire to the priest's body after the slaying.
