Forestville service dog group wins recycling prize

A Forestville service dog group won top honors in a national recycling contest in which they prevented 21,412 plastic cups from entering the landfill.

Paws as Loving Support collected the cups from local businesses, including the Airport Health Club, between May and September, said Cheryl Collins, the group's fundraising director.

For their efforts, they will receive a two-cent per cup refund and a $60 prize from the contest sponsor, New Jersey-based Terracycle Inc.

Paws as Loving Support placed second overall, said Terracycle spokeswoman Lauren Taylor.

The ubiquitous cups are among several items including energy bar wrappers and chip bags that are usually not recyclable. Terracycle “repurposes” the materials into things like backpacks and garden fencing.

Collins said the prize money will help support about six dogs a year that are raised and trained by the group to help disabled people.
