Raiders notebook: D.J. Hayden has little to say after awful outing

  • Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper, right, catches a 17-yard touchdown pass against Oakland Raiders cornerback DJ Hayden during the second quarter of an NFL football game in Oakland on Sunday.

OAKLAND — Raiders cornerback DJ Hayden must have felt like he was lost in a three-hour nightmare from which he couldn't wake. The Eagles targeted the rookie early and often, picking up many of their 419 passing yards at his expense.

Hayden's lowlights included letting Philadelphia's Riley Cooper run right by him at the left sideline and reel in a 17-yard touchdown pass; falling down and allowing Cooper to gouge him for a 63-yard score; and missing the ball with a late swipe on DeSean Jackson's 59-yard catch in the third quarter.

Reporters approached Hayden for comment after the game, but he declined, saying, “No, I'm good.”

Veteran free safety Charles Woodson, who played a lot of cornerback himself during his first stint with the Raiders, was more forthcoming.

“DJ is the 12th (overall) pick in the draft,” Woodson said. “Nobody's going to feel sorry for him. And one thing about it is he was in position. He was in position to make plays.

“Those are plays he's going to have to make going forward. I know he'll replay those plays in his mind every second of the day going forward, and he'll figure out what he needs to do to make those plays.”

IT ISN'T ELEMENTARY, WATSON

It was a more auspicious day for another Raiders rookie. Menelik Watson, a second-round pick from Florida State, finally made his NFL debut, subbing for the injured Matt McCants (foot) at right tackle late in the second quarter.

“It feels good,” Watson said in his thick British accent; he's from Manchester, England. “Right now I can't be happy about what happened out there. I mean, that was very frustrating. But I'm happy to be back out on the field. It was good to get out there, get your hands on somebody, move some people around.”
