Two cut in knife fight in downtown Santa Rosa

Two men were cut early Sunday when a fight broke out between men drinking in downtown Santa Rosa, police said.

Witnesses called 911 at 2:27 a.m. Officers detained two men on Mendocino Avenue near Fourth Street and spotted another trying to flee. They stopped the man, later identified as David Prochaska, 26, from Wisconsin, Sgt. David Boettger said in a statement. Prochaska had several lacerations on his hands.

Officers found another man bleeding from face and neck wounds at the corner of Fifth Street, Boettger said. He was identified as Derick Schell of San Francisco.

Both men were taken to the hospital and treated for injuries that weren't life-threatening.

Officers learned the men had been drinking downtown and at some point started to fight, during which Prochaska allegedly pulled out a knife, Boettger said.

Prochaska was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail at the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
