KENWOOD: Chef/owner Max Schacher is in the process of selling his landmark eatery, Kenwood Restaurant, to restaurateur William Foss of Windsor.
Foss, who also owns Fish Restaurant in Sausalito, said the transfer of ownership is expected to happen by mid-September, at which point he will be doing some renovations.
“Our intention is to go in and give it a light facelift and redo paint,” said Foss, who likes the fact that the ranch-style building is a native California architectural style “Anything we do is designed to make it be more visible.”
Foss, who also owns a seafood company in Sausalito, plans to keep the name but shorten it to The Kenwood. The menu will reflect the fresh produce and the multi-cultural melting pot of the area.
“The goal is to create Sonoma regional cuisine,” he said. “We're trying to say this is a very important region, just as important as Provence and Spain, and we're trying to define what it is and use local products to make Sonoma food.”
The popular roadhouse - the former Bunny's Country Kitchen that served fried chicken in the 1960s - has a garden and vineyard onsite. Foss said he hopes to serve “quality mixology” at the full bar.
Schacher, who was born in Switzerland and has cooked all over the world, said he plans to “take it easy for awhile” after running the restaurant for 26 years.
