Florida fugitive suspected in Lake County pot-by-mail plan

A Lake County man and a fugitive from Florida were arrested Thursday in connection with a suspected illegal marijuana growing operation in Lucerne.

Lake County Sheriff’s Department officials were working in conjunction with U.S. Marshals to track down Nathan Lee Steffen, 35, of Fort Meyers, Fla. for an outstanding warrant. Steffen was believed to be staying at a home on the 6000 block of 14th Avenue where he was seen leaving in a vehicle just after midnight Thursday morning. He was stopped and investigators discovered a box labeled for shipment to Florida contained marijuana.

A subsequent search of a home on 14th Avenue uncovered 15 marijuana plants growing outside, 60 plants growing in the garage and approximately 63 ounces of processed marijuana in the house, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

Charles Daniel Wilson, 31, of Lucerne was arrested at the residence. He was arrested for possession of marijuana for sale and the cultivation of marijuana. Steffen was arrested for possession of marijuana for sale, cultivation of marijuana and the out of state warrant.

Both Wilson and Steffen were taken to the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility and booked.
