Conventional fireworks leave behind a cloud of lead, barium, chromium, chlorates and carbon monoxide, among other chemicals. European researchers are working on alternatives using nitrogen-rich compounds, but they are still in development.
Until then:
- Enjoy the night by the light of a fire or (soy) candles. Roast marshmallows and watch the sparks fly.
- Break out the noisemakers. Buy them at party stores or make your own by filling an empty soup can with pennies and taping it up.
- Host a block party
- Attend a laser light show, or, make your own (www.wikihow.com/Make-Your-Own-Laser-Light-Show)
